Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; for it becomes your destiny. -- Upanishads

One of Buddha’s main teachings is that Everything in life is Impermanent. What does Impermanence mean? It can mean different things to all of us but I think the best way to understand “Impermanence” is to say that everything in life will change.

Change…Season changes, Flowers wilt, we get older, our mind and beliefs change (hopefully), our thoughts change from moment to moment, fashion changes constantly, society changes over time and I think my ears get bit longer everyday (seriously!). You get my point that everything changes and we can either accept this notion or be resistant to it.

Resistant to change causes stagnation. If you resist change, you get stuck. Life keeps going and change will occur whether you accept it or not. For example, imagine what would happen if everyone resists the “Green Movement”, if we do not recycle, reduce and reuse resources as a nation? We would create more waste, and deplete earth’s natural resources.

So Kids…your humble yoga teacher says “Embrace Change and Discover the benefits of trying new things.” Here are a few ideas: Try a new flavor next time you have ice-cream (I suggest Durian…Yummy), go for a walk in the rain (on purpose), talk to someone new in the yoga change room the next time you are at the studio and try one of the new yoga classes if you have not already. Have a great summer and be good to yourself.
