Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; for it becomes your destiny. -- Upanishads

Once I asked a fellow yogi, why do we do Savasana? I see my students, even myself leaving right after the teacher leaves the room...It becomes a game to see how many people are left in the room after a tough practice.... Some people take it to balance the body with heart rate and breath before you step out of the hot room or just as simple as meditation. Which ever way you take it,there is a big importance to Savasana than the physical part or just the meditation part.
This is from a blog on a hot yoga website.
"Savasana was a yogic practice long before clocks and rush hour traffic, and for that matter, long before heart rate monitors and stress measures. Savasana isn't called "dead body pose" only because you LOOK like you're dead while you're doing it, but because you reach a state of total relaxation and give yourself over to shallow breath, slowing the... See More heart and easing the mind and body at the same time. It's purpose goes far beyond what's happening physically. I wonder what would happen for you if you simply stopped counting, stopped wondering/worrying about everyone and stayed in savasana until you were no longer waiting to leave? Sometimes I play with this. I stay until it doesn't matter to me anymore what time it is and where everyone else is and what my heart rate and my breath are doing. By doing this I come a little closer to this meaningful and important practice. In savasana at the end of a very tough yoga practice you are in a place of receptivity and openness. What might the Universe be sending your way in those moments? What might you in that moment of perfect stillness be able to receive? As Westerners we have far more to gain from savasana than a lower heart rate. What other time do we ever practice pointless stillness, for the sake of nothing more than being still...?"
So, next time you are in your Savasana, what will your mind or body be doing? Can you BE in Savasana? :) I am definitely practicing my savasana with more grace and awareness next time. Try it and it might change your practice all together or it might even change your life.
