Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; for it becomes your destiny. -- Upanishads

Ouch, my wrists!

Oh no...I've been waking up frequently during my "good nights" sleep and either one hand, or sometimes both are numb, tingling, pins and needles, they feel frozen. My fingertips are numb. WHAT A BUMMER!!!
CARPAL TUNNEL!!
Your carpal tunnel is located on the palm side of the hand and up the wrist. This tunnel houses your forearm flexor tendons and your median nerve.
Put your hand palm down on a flat surface. Draw a line from your middle finger to your wrist, and then a line from your thumb to your wrist. In between the lines is where you need to keep an ARCH while you are doing any yoga poses where you place your palm on the floor. You have to press through your fingertip/thumb tip actively.
Over time, if you push down and compress this area over and over again (without the little arch lift) - it will start to compromise your median nerve -
and that's when the symptoms may occur!!
Tingling - numbness or pain up your wrist or in your hand. When I am sleeping, I guess I keep bending my wrist - so it ends up putting pressure on that nerve.
Arrrghhhhh.
I have been teaching a lot of classes, working hard on practicing my handstands, my planks, my downward dogs, my chaturunga, my wheel, my rock star!!!...
Yes - all the magical yoga poaes that put a lot of pressure on my poor little wrists!
BUMMER!
BUT GUESS WHAT? THERE ARE SOLUTIONS SO THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO SUFFER FROM THIS WRIST/CARPAL TUNNEL ISSUE.
HOW TO PREVENT -
Please remember -
Any yoga pose where you are planting your hands down - make sure your middle finger is facing forward - Your wrist creases are facing forward - and MOST IMPORATANT -
PLEASE PUT EVEN weight distribution on your hands - fingers - and a bit of an arch lift between your thumb and middle finger -
BUT - make sure you are not rolling to far to the outside of your hand.
KEEP EVEN WEIGHT!
Also -
Keep your shoulders above wrists when doing PLANKS PUSH UPS TO LOW PUSH UPS.
And listen to the teacher when they tell you where to place your hands - shoulders - wrists and arms.
You can prevent overuse and pain if you
PAY ATTENTION while you are riding that yoga wave!
Stay safe:)))
I thinK I may have to buy those yoga wristguards and wear them for a while.
Or shoUld I wear my wristguards while I am sleeping?
(Funny visual)
Well - I'm not givin up yoga - so the guards may be my solution.
Stay safe yogis!!
Peace
Andrea
