Pumpkin walk to benefit hospital
To raise money for new facilities and upgrades at Peace Arch Hospital, the first annual Great Pumpkin Run/Walk will be held Oct. 28.
The Halloween-themed event will have a one- and five-kilometre route, which will start and finish at the hospital’s main parking lot.
The event will also include a health education fair where people can get their blood pressure checked and receive tips on healthy living.
There will also be prizes, and draws for participants wearing costumes.
Money raised will benefit the Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation’s Partners in Caring campaign.
The $32-million campaign aims to add more acute care beds to the hospital, modernize the maternity ward, add an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine, expand the community-based cardiac rehabilitation facility and begin planning for an expanded emergency department.
At 7:30 a.m., day-of registration will begin, donation collection booths will open and the health education fair will start.
A warm-up will start at 8:45 a.m., with music and stretching at the main stage led by Westcoast Hot Yoga.
The five-kilometre will begin at 9 a.m. and the one-kilometre sets off at 9:05 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded to first place male and female in the five kilometre, first place cardiac rehab program male and female in the five kilometre, top three fundraisers, top fundraising team, top cardiac rehab fundraising team and costume participation draws.
Participants in the event are required to pre-register by phone, fax or drop off their forms at the foundation office (located in the main lobby of the hospital). Fees are $25 per person. A team of eight can be registered for $150. Children 12 years and under, and those who collect $100 or more in donations, will receive free registration. Deadline for registrations is Wednesday, Oct. 24.
Race packages will be available for pickup at Peninsula Runners, 1708 152 St., on Oct. 26 from noon to 4 p.m., and Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
